Two shots, twenty heartbeats apart: what a biathlete knows about your pressure

A biathlete shoots twice in the same race, minutes apart. Her heart doesn't need to be in the same place for both, twenty beats separate them.

A biathlete skis into the range. She's just come off the track flat out, heart running at about 90 percent of her max. A second after she stops, it's still at 85 to 87 percent.

Five targets are waiting, fifty meters out. Prone, they're 45 millimeters across, a golf ball. Standing, 115.

Two researchers strapped heart rate monitors on elite American biathletes mid-race to see what happens in the last seconds before the first shot. Across the fifty to sixty seconds of the approach, her heart rate comes down by ten or twelve beats. Ten. Not sixty. And the lowest she gets on the range is still 61 to 73 percent of her max.

She shoots with her chest hammering. That's not the plan going wrong. That's where the shooting happens.

Sara Studebaker-Hall raced biathlon for the United States at two Olympics, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. In a February 12, 2018 interview with Popular Science, she laid out three bands rather than one scale. Up high, the beat comes so fast you stop picking it out. Down at rest, you don't feel it either. In between, just above normal, there's a band where you feel every beat one at a time, and it travels into your hand on the stock. She marked that band as the one you don't want to sink into, and tied it to how fast biathletes shoot: twenty to twenty-five seconds on the range for the best in the world.

So it isn't a scale where lower is better. There's a band to stay out of, and it sits below the level she shoots at.

Prone and standing: two levels, one race

Same race, same athlete, two trips to the range. Once lying down. Once on her feet.

Prone, she's shooting at a golf ball. Standing, at a target two and a half times wider.

And her heart isn't in the same place for both. The lowest point she hits shooting prone sits about twenty beats under the standing one. The authors put that down to two things: prone, she stays on the range longer, and once she's flat her rate falls off faster.

Twenty beats. Same person, same day, same race.

Neither one is calm: both sit at 61 percent of her max or higher. But they are not the same level. There is no version of her that is at the right pressure for the whole race.

Your zone isn't mine

Here's the part that changes everything, and no graph will show it to you.

That level isn't the same for you as for the person two lockers down. Juri Hanin spent the better part of forty years measuring it in elite sport, one athlete at a time, instead of averaging groups. Pooling forty-one measurements across 3,175 athletes, he and a colleague found a clean gap: athletes who start inside their own zone outperform the ones who have drifted out of it. But one athlete's zone is the next one's red line.

Watch a locker room ten minutes out. That's exactly what you see. Headphones on and shouting down the tunnel at one end, dead quiet and a blank stare at the other. Both of them are right.

And it doesn't even hold still inside one match. The serve isn't the return. The gun going off in the 100 isn't the last bend of the 400. A teamfight isn't the farming phase. The same player goes up and back down three times in an hour, same as the biathlete between her prone stage and her standing one.

So the word "pressure" doesn't tell you much until you've answered two questions. Where's mine right now? And for what I have to do in the next twenty seconds, where does it need to be?

Locate it, don't lower it

Sometimes the answer really is to come down. The prone stage takes the biathlete twenty beats below the standing one, and for that target, that's right. Calm is a level like any other. Now and then it's exactly the one you want.

What doesn't work is defaulting to it. Hands shaking, stomach tight, heart climbing: inside the window of a match, that's your body coming online. It goes up before, it comes down after. Silencing it without knowing where you are is like moving a dial with your eyes shut.

That way of reading it has a limit, and the limit counts as much as the rest. If it doesn't come down, if it's still with you the next day, if it keeps you up all week, if it catches you nowhere near the field, if it's fear and not nerves, that's not an activation level anymore, and an article won't sort it out. That's where you say it out loud to the people around you, and to someone qualified.

The rest of the time, there's no right number to hit. There's where you are, where you'd need to be, and a direction to push. Sometimes down. More often up.

What makes people miss is almost never pressure. It's not knowing what level they're on, and not knowing what level the next twenty seconds would need them to be on.
